“Who can become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)?” is one of those pivotal questions I found myself pondering when I first discovered what a CRNA was and considered becoming one.
Growing up, healthcare careers were not on my radar. No family members in healthcare, no friends aspiring to it, and I certainly never envisioned myself becoming a Nurse.
My foray into healthcare began unexpectedly in college. I was halfway through a different degree when a chance encounter with a CRNA at a church cookout set my life on a new course.
That conversation led me down a rabbit hole of exploring the CRNA profession.
Since I was not in healthcare at the time, I had numerous questions about this fascinating career of administering anesthesia and becoming a Nurse Anesthesiologist.
Basics of Becoming a Nurse Anethesist
Several requirements must be met to enter CRNA School and become a practicing CRNA:
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN).
- Pass the NCLEX and hold a valid RN license.
- Work in a Critical Care or ICU setting as an RN for 1-2 plus years.
- Take the GRE (this varies from school to school).
- Get accepted into an Accredited CRNA School.
- Pass your Anesthesia Boards!
- Apply for and obtain State Licensure.
- Become a CRNA.

Must-Haves to be a CRNA
To become a CRNA, you must be a lifelong learner. Not only will school be a time of intense learning, but the ever-evolving nature of healthcare technology and knowledge means continuous learning even as a practicing CRNA.
No Passion for Healthcare… Okay?
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to start with a burning passion for healthcare to become a CRNA.
I wasn’t passionate… at first.
However, as you progress in this career and delve deeper into anesthesia practice, the field must become an integral part of you. You might not let anesthesia consume your life, but it should resonate with you enough to care deeply about each patient, ensuring the best anesthetic and outcomes for everyone you treat.

It’s open to anyone with the willpower and determination to study hard, fulfill all the requirements of the schools you apply to, and overcome the challenges life throws at you.
There are all types of CRNAs practicing across the country, many of whom have surmounted significant hurdles to get where they are today. It’s not always easy; there will be times when it feels too hard, and you might want to give up. But don’t. Find a way.
